Lukas Nelson

Lukas Nelson is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader known for fronting the country-rock band Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, his longstanding collaboration with Neil Young, and his contributions as co-writer, co-producer, and performer on the Grammy-winning soundtrack for the 2018 film A Star Is Born . As the son of country music legend Willie Nelson, he has established himself as a distinctive voice in Americana, rock, and roots music through insightful songwriting and dynamic live performances. Born on December 25, 1988, in Austin, Texas, Nelson grew up in a deeply musical environment, splitting time between Maui and Texas while surrounded by influential artists. He began writing songs as a child, with his first composition at age 11 earning praise from Kris Kristofferson and later recorded by his father. After moving to Los Angeles in 2007, he formed Promise of the Real in 2008, building a band that emphasizes authenticity and long-term musical partnership over commercial pursuits. The band gained prominence through multiple Americana albums and, in 2015, became Neil Young's backing group, contributing to several studio and live recordings as well as extensive touring. In 2024, Promise of the Real went on indefinite hiatus as Nelson shifted focus to solo work. Nelson's involvement in A Star Is Born further elevated his profile, where he helped shape Bradley Cooper's musical portrayal, co-wrote and co-produced several tracks including "Music to My Eyes" and "Black Eyes," and appeared on-screen with his band. Throughout his career, Nelson has maintained a commitment to honest storytelling and musical integrity, drawing from blues, country, and rock traditions while exploring themes of love, loss, and American experience. He has continued to collaborate with artists across genres, perform at major festivals, and release acclaimed work, including his first solo album American Romance in partnership with Sony Music Nashville. Lukas Nelson was born on December 25, 1988, to country music legend Willie Nelson and Annie D'Angelo. His parents married in 1991. He has a younger full brother, Jacob Micah Nelson (professionally known as Micah Nelson), born on January 24, 1990. Nelson also has several half-siblings from his father's previous relationships. The brothers spent their early years between Luck, Texas (near Austin), and Maui, Hawaii, where their father owned property, shaping a family lifestyle influenced by Willie Nelson's long touring career in music. This environment involved periods of relocation and immersion in a music-centric household due to their father's professional commitments. Lukas Nelson spent much of his childhood growing up primarily in Maui, Hawaii, while also traveling back and forth to the Texas Hill Country and spending considerable time on tour buses with his family. His parents chose to raise him and his brother Micah in Maui partly to allow a more anonymous life away from the intense public attention his father received in Texas. During his early years in Maui, Nelson enjoyed an active outdoor lifestyle that included surfing, skateboarding, swimming, and soccer, but music gradually became his central passion as instruments were always present around the house and great music filled his environment through his father's circle of musicians. He traded his surfboard for a guitar around age 10 or 11, receiving his first instrument—a Stratocaster he named Bonnie—from his parents, and began practicing intensely, often for 8 to 10 hours a day. His mother, Annie D'Angelo, introduced him to a wide range of classic rock, including Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as Motown and Stax records, while his father and members of his father's band provided exposure to country music and informal teaching that shaped his balanced appreciation for rock and country.
