Maurice Thompson

Maurice Thompson is an American novelist, poet, essayist, and naturalist known for his regional literature celebrating Indiana's landscapes and history, as well as his pioneering writings that helped revive archery in the United States. Born James Maurice Thompson on September 9, 1844, in Fairfield, Indiana, he spent his early years in several states, including Georgia, where his childhood immersion in the natural world fostered lifelong interests in ornithology and outdoor pursuits. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War before returning to Indiana, where he settled in Crawfordsville and pursued careers as a civil engineer, lawyer, and eventually state geologist from 1885 to 1889.

Thompson's literary career began with contributions to newspapers and magazines in the 1870s, evolving into a prolific body of work that included local color sketches, nature poetry, and historical romance. His early collection Hoosier Mosaics captured small-town Indiana life, while The Witchery of Archery became a landmark text that revitalized public interest in the sport and led to his role as the founding president of the National Archery Association in 1879. His most successful novel, Alice of Old Vincennes , presented a vivid historical romance set during the Revolutionary War era in Indiana. Through his writings, Thompson consistently defended Indiana's natural beauty and cultural significance, contributing to the state's literary tradition during its period of prominence in American letters.

He died on February 15, 1901, leaving a legacy that bridges literature, natural observation, and outdoor recreation.

James Maurice Thompson was born on September 9, 1844, in Fairfield, Indiana, to Grigg and Diantha (Jalgger) Thompson. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Missouri, then briefly back to Indiana, to Kentucky (where he developed an interest in ornithology around age 10), and finally to Georgia in the mid-1850s. The Georgia landscape, particularly the Cherokee Hills, profoundly influenced his later writings. He was largely home-schooled by his mother, a cultured New Yorker, though much of his education came from exploring the woods, where he developed habits of sketching and detailed field notes. These experiences fostered his lifelong passions for nature, outdoor sports including archery, and ornithology.

Thompson served two years in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he studied law and moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1868, where he worked as a civil engineer for the I.B. & W. railroad. He began practicing law in 1871 and later served as Indiana State Geologist from 1885 to 1889.

His literary career started in the 1870s with contributions of poems, reviews, essays, and local-color sketches to newspapers and magazines, including the New York Tribune. His first major work, Hoosier Mosaics (1875), was a collection of short stories depicting small-town Indiana life. The Witchery of Archery (1878) was a seminal work on bow hunting that helped revive archery in America, leading to his founding and presidency of the National Archery Association in 1879. Other notable works include poetry collections such as Songs of Fair Weather (1883) and Poems (1892), and historical fiction like Alice of Old Vincennes (1900), his most popular novel set during the Revolutionary War in Indiana. He also published Stories of Indiana (1898), blending historical accounts and creative narratives about the state's natural and cultural history.

Thompson remained a prolific contributor to periodicals, often writing essays defending Indiana's cultural and environmental significance.

Little is documented about Thompson's family life beyond his parents and early moves. He settled in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he lived for much of his adult life. Specific details on marriage, children, or later personal events are not extensively covered in available sources.
