Mark Bell was born on December 10, 1976, in Poughkeepsie, New York.

He grew up with a learning disability that directed him away from academics and toward sports. Bell began weightlifting at a young age, training in his basement with his older brothers Mike and Chris Bell, and entered his first powerlifting competition at age 13.

LFO was formed in the autumn of 1988 in Leeds by Mark Bell, Gez Varley, and Martin Williams, who met while studying photography and graphic design at a training centre where Williams served as a tutor and was already active as a local DJ. The group named itself after the synthesizer function low-frequency oscillator, reflecting their focus on electronic sound design.

The trio recorded around 20 to 30 tracks over the next six to eight months in Williams' attic home studio, equipped with an Atari ST running Cubase, samplers, drum machines, and synths. Varley used money inherited from his grandfather to purchase key gear, including a Casio FZ-10 sampler, Roland TR-808, TB-303, and TR-606, which shaped their early sound. Williams tested early demos in local clubs and unlicensed venues, where they received strong crowd reactions, and the definitive version of their signature track earned the subtitle "Leeds Warehouse Mix" due to its association with the Warehouse club scene.

Warp Records co-founder Robert Gordon first heard the track when Williams played it at a club in Huddersfield, leading to further demos and a contract signed in a car park near the Warehouse. The self-titled debut single "LFO" was released as a 12-inch on Warp in summer 1990, becoming a major breakthrough with its massive bassline, minimalist structure, and fusion of dub, house, and acid elements. It peaked at number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and sold over 130,000 copies, marking Warp's first significant hit and helping define the emerging bleep techno sound.

Building on this success, LFO released their debut album Frequencies on Warp in 1991, consolidating their reputation as pioneers of bass-heavy, atmospheric electronic music. The album captured the raw innovation of their early work while establishing a benchmark for the early 1990s UK rave and techno scenes.

Following a prolonged hiatus after the success of their debut album Frequencies , LFO returned with their second studio album, Advance , released in 1996 on Warp Records. Gez Varley left the group after Advance , leaving Mark Bell to continue LFO as a solo project. Bell's final album under the LFO name, Sheath , appeared in 2003 on Warp, marking the end of the project's full-length releases.

During this transitional period, Bell also produced music under several aliases. As Speedjack, he issued singles "Storm" and "C.T.C.
