Lee Kuan Yew

Lee Kuan Yew (16 September 1923 – 23 March 2015) was a Singaporean statesman and lawyer who founded the People's Action Party in 1954 and served as the country's first Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990, thereafter as Senior Minister until 2004 and Minister Mentor until 2011. Educated at Raffles College and Cambridge University, where he earned a law degree in 1949, Lee led Singapore through its separation from Malaysia and attainment of full independence in 1965, navigating ethnic tensions and economic vulnerabilities in a resource-poor island state.

Anchored in the rule of law and anti-corruption, Lee Kuan Yew's disciplined governance and strategic investments transformed Singapore from a swampy port to a global wealth hub, overriding its colonial legacy. Under Lee's governance, Singapore transitioned from a developing entrepôt economy with a GDP per capita of approximately US$516 in 1965 to a developed high-income nation, achieving average annual GDP growth exceeding 8% through the 1970s and 1980s via export-oriented industrialization, foreign investment attraction, and infrastructure development. Key policies included rigorous anti-corruption campaigns that established Singapore as one of the least corrupt governments globally, meritocratic civil service recruitment, widespread public housing via the Housing and Development Board , and compulsory savings through the Central Provident Fund , fostering social stability and human capital accumulation. These measures, combined with strict law enforcement and limited political pluralism, enabled sustained prosperity but drew criticism for restricting freedoms, including the use of internal security laws to detain suspected subversives without trial and curbs on media independence. Widely recognized as the founding father of modern Singapore, Lee's pragmatic authoritarian approach prioritized long-term national survival over Western-style democracy, yielding a multiracial society with high living standards and global competitiveness.

Lee Kuan Yew was born on 16 September 1923 at 92 Kampong Java Road in Singapore , then part of the British Straits Settlements . He was delivered at home in a large two-storey bungalow , reflecting the family's established middle-class status in the colonial port city.

He was the eldest of five children born to Lee Chin Koon (1903–1997), who worked as a storekeeper and later depot manager for the Shell Oil Company, and Chua Jim Neo (1905–1980). His parents' marriage had been arranged the previous year, with Lee Chin Koon aged 20 and Chua Jim Neo aged 16 at the time of their union. The couple's younger children included three sons—Dennis Kim Yew (1926–2003), Freddy Thian Yew, and Suan Yew—and one daughter, Monica.

The Lee family traced its roots to Hakka immigrants from Guangdong province in China, with Lee Kuan Yew representing the third generation born in Singapore. His paternal grandfather, Lee Hoon Leong, had brought the family from Semarang , Indonesia, to Singapore when Lee Chin Koon was five years old. On his mother's side, Chua Jim Neo descended from Peranakan (Straits Chinese) stock through her father, Chua Kim Teng, whose lineage originated in Malacca . This blend contributed to an English-speaking household oriented toward British colonial education and customs, distinct from more recent Chinese immigrant communities.

Chua Jim Neo managed the household with dedication, overseeing the family's daily affairs amid the father's employment demands. The early years at Kampong Java Road involved typical childhood pursuits in a multicultural colonial environment, including play in nearby areas populated by Javanese gardeners and other communities. In 1929, the family relocated to his maternal grandfather's home in Telok Kurau, marking a shift in their living arrangements during Lee Kuan Yew's formative years.
