Dr. Tommy Wood
Tommy Wood (also known as Thomas Ragnar Wood) is a British neuroscientist and physician known for his research on neonatal brain injury and his public outreach on optimizing brain health and performance.
He serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neuroscience at the University of Washington, where his work centers on developing animal models—primarily in rodents and ferrets—to study premature brain injury and neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Wood trained at prestigious British institutions, earning a medical qualification (BM BCh) and conducting research in physiology and neuroscience leading to a PhD.
Beyond academia, Wood engages broad audiences through the Better Brain Fitness podcast, which he co-hosts to explore strategies for maintaining cognitive health, and he has contributed to works on brain performance, including the forthcoming book The Stimulated Mind . He also serves as a performance consultant to elite athletes, translating scientific insights into practical applications for brain optimization and dementia prevention. His multifaceted career bridges rigorous laboratory research with accessible science communication to advance understanding of brain resilience across the lifespan.
Thomas Ragnar Wood is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics (Divisions of Neonatology and Institute on Human Development and Disability) and Neuroscience at the University of Washington. He also directs the IDDRC Animal Behavior Core. His research specializes in animal models of brain injury in newborns, focusing on therapies for premature brain injury and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
Wood is a UK-trained physician with a BM BCh and PhD in physiology and neuroscience. His academic work has emphasized developing treatments for neonatal brain injury.
Wood co-hosts the Better Brain Fitness podcast with Dr. Josh Turknett, discussing brain health, performance, and preventing cognitive decline. He frequently appears as a guest on other podcasts and provides consulting to elite athletes on brain optimization.
